Academically, my extensive work in the Apparel and Textile Design Department at Michigan State University (MSU) and the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) allowed me to gain an understanding and appreciation for flawless designs and intricate details. The curriculum at MSU was geared to both functional designs and mass market studies. Most of my class studies centered around technical computer skills including Adobe software (Photoshop and Illustrator), WebPDM and U4ia. On the functional side, I learned to focus my designs on their practical uses as opposed to pure aesthetics. In addition, during my time at MSU I created the curriculum for an independent study where I researched and designed garments around topics including eco-fashion, fur designs, and technical design.
At FIT I studied more defined aspects of design including couture sewing techniques, womens tailoring, as well as patternmaking techniques. In fact, at FIT my graduating garment was placed on exhibit at the end of the year showcase, which was both a unique and great honor. Additionally, at FIT I focused my designs towards the couture and high-price-point market where I learned hand sewing techniques, practiced a myriad of seam finishes, and worked with high end fabrics.
